Jules Tanner is a director, actor, theatre artist, and writer. He was homeschooled until the age of fourteen, and then transitioned in to taking classes as a youth learner at Massasoit Community College. Jules began his formal collegiate experience at Boston University, and was a proud member of the institution’s prestigious dual degree program, from which he earned both a B.A. in Philosophy(Cum Laude) and a B.F.A. in Theatre Arts.
Jules believes in the fundamental importance of storytelling as a tool for expanding one’s worldview. In a society that often demands a high degree of self-involvement and a crippling reliance on screens, storytelling offers us a venue to deliver and receive experiences on a visceral, personal level. It strikes at the heart of what makes us human. It awakens our compassion. Stories are, above all, an opportunity to unlock our potential by bridging the gap between our imaginations and our reality.
Areas of philosophical interest include political philosophy, social philosophy, philosophy of mind, and aesthetics. He has a strong background in the intersection of philosophy, history, and performance, and believes that developing a holistic understanding of that intersection provides the grounds for a visceral, ethical, and sustainable artistic practice. His curiosity is reflected in the diversity of his projects: he has directed world premieres of fresh new plays, coached actors in preparation for both auditions and character work, assistant directed for many theatre companies in the Boston area, performed in classical pieces (’Tis Pity She’s A Whore and Twelfth Night), delighted in challenging contemporary comedies (Labyrinth of Desire), and mounted his senior thesis (NO EXIT) which he both designed and directed.
